A Day Trip to Ring of Kerry, Kerry Co., Ireland

Ring of Kerry: The Ring of Kerry is a well-known tourist destination in Ireland. The Ring generally starts and ends at Killarney. Cork is the nearest airport to Killarney. Private tours and tour buses run throughout the year from all major cities. Even though renting a car in Ireland is painful, driving is the best way to see the Ring of Kerry. The tour buses start at Killarney and go around the ring in the counter-clockwise direction. If you are planning on driving, go around the ring in a clockwise direction so that you can avoid spending time behind a tour bus. A quick tour around the Ring is about 200km and would take about a day. But you can easily spend a day in Killarney, a day driving the ring and a day visiting Skellig Michael in summer months.
Torc Waterfalls
Killarney: You can reach Killarney the day before and have a good night's sleep at one of the many hotels. On the day of the trip, pack a good amount of snacks for the road. Killarney National Park and the surrounding areas alone would take a day to visit. Ross Castle is a 15th-century castle on the banks of Killarney lake. A quick tour of the castle and boat tour of Lough Leane is a good addition to the itinerary. Muckross House is a 19th-century mansion with gardens and working farms. A short visit to Muckross House is time well spent. Kerry Mountains are a short distance from Killarney National Park. There are a lot of walking and hiking trails around the mountains. Cronin's Yard is a good place to park the car and hike the beautiful Kerry Mountains. The gap of Dunloe and wishing bridge are magical places to visit.
Ladies View
Ladies View & Molls Gap: If short on time, a shortstop at Torc waterfalls, Ladies View and Molls Gap would suffice. For a day trip around the ring, the best route is to take N71 from Killarney to Kenmare, drive on N70 around the ring till Killorglin and follow N72 from Killorglin to Killarney.

Kenmare & Sneem: Kenmare and Sneem are two cute Irish villages along the ring and are good stops for a quick bite. There are several B&B, golf courses along the way. Keep an eye out for lookout points and beautiful beaches. During summer months, Glenbeg caravan park is very popular with the campers.

Skellig Ring: Skellig Ring is a link to the Ring of Kerry. At Kenneigh, take a left on to R567 and head towards Ballinskelligs. Ballinskelligs is a small village with beautiful secluded beaches. A short ride from Ballinskelligs takes you to a small village of Keel. With a beautiful beach of St. Finian's Bay and Skelligs Chocolate factory at a walkable distance, Keel is a fantastic choice to spend a few hours.

Kerry Cliffs: They might not be as popular as Cliffs of Moher but they are still beautiful to visit.

Portmagee & Valentia Island: Skellig Ring ends at Pormagee. During summer months, several tour operators run regular tours from Portmagee to Skellig Michael. Valentia Island has rich geological resources and is reachable by the bridge only from Portmagee. A slate quarry, lighthouse, and beautiful views attract visitors to this island.
From Portmagee, follow R565 towards N70-North. If time permits, visit the Bog village museum on your way to Killorglin. At Killorglin, take N72 towards Killarney.

Mizen Head and Barleycove Beach, Goleen, Cork Co., Ireland

Welcome to the Wild Atlantic Way where the rugged beauty of Ireland lies. Mizen head is considered the South - Western tip of Ireland and is part of Cork County.  A trip to Cork Co. is never complete without visiting Mizen head. It is best viewed on a clear summer day. It takes around 2hrs to drive from Cork city center to the Mizen head. The drive can be hectic if you are a novice driver in Ireland.
Mizen Head in 15 Seconds - Derrick Path
Plenty of free parking spots are available right in front of the visitor center. The visitor center houses a small cafe and gift shop. Adult entry is around €7.50 and not too bad for such an amazing place. The main walkway is paved and is stroller accessible for the most part. There are several trails branched out from the main walkway leading to multiple vista points. Many of these branching paths have steep climb or stairs. Take time to visit all the vista points. They are well worth the climb.
The Wild Atlantic Way
Even though it is beautiful, Mizen head didn't look like a typical tourist destination. It might be the weather, inaccessibility, or sheer lack of marketing. This place does not draw as many tourists as it should. In a way, it could be a good thing. As I took my time to soak up the views.
Coast Line Cliffs
The visit takes around 2-3 hrs. But, take your own time to watch the ocean waves crash on the moss-covered rugged stone cliffs. Pink, white and yellow wildflowers add a tender touch to the rugged coastal line. No picture can ever do justice to this place. You need to be there to see it.
Mizen Head Trails - Bridge View Path
The main walkway has beautiful coastal cliff views. Cross the iconic Mizen bridge and at the end of the path is the signal station. Look out for seals swimming in the turquoise water underneath the bridge. On the way back, make a brief stop at the keeper's quarters, bird mural room.

On the way, make a stop at Barleycove Beach. This is a piece of heaven in Cork Co. with crystal clear waters, less crowd, and unspoiled beach. Destination I want to get lost in, just to find myself again.

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California

Eat, Shop, Play, Relax and Cruise at the Fisherman's Wharf of San Francisco.  From crab-cakes to nutella crepes, what ever your choice of food is, they got it covered. Cookies, ice-cream, chocolates, candie they got it all at Fisherman's Wharf. Don't forget the fresh fruit at Vlaho's fruit Orchard. They have a good collection of fruits where you can shop in the market and after purchasing, you can wash it and eat it too. That is an unexpected nice touch at the end. This place has a good selection of restaurants to dine in.
Taking a public transportation to Fisherman's Wharf is probably the best choice because of heavy traffic and high parking prices. Streetcars and busses are available till the Fisherman's Wharf. Public parking is also available but it is way too crowded. Popular attractions of this place includes the Sea Lion Center, the Aquarium, Madam Tussauds museum. If you are planning to visit these attractions, it is economical to go with City Pass.
Bay tour cruises and tours to Alcatraz start from Pier 39. Alcatraz tour might need prior reservations. Check the weather before taking a tour. Clear skies can make the tour more enjoyable.
If nothing appeals, pick a bench and gaze upon the Sea Lions and seagulls on the west side of the pier. Variety of city tours start from Fisherman's Wharf. That is a good way to know what is where in the city and plan accordingly.
At last, check out the cute souvenir shops for cute sand dollars, shell and much more.

US Route 1, California

We took a scenic route from Golden Gate Bridge to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey, CA. Starting at the Golden Gate bridge, the US Route 1 passes through Golden Gate Park, Dale City, Half Moon Bay, HI Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Santa Cruz to Monterey.
The drive is so beautiful, it is totally worth the time for a detour. The lighthouse is a hostel where you can rent rooms with ocean views. Most of the highway has stops to park the car and take a quick trip to the beach. These cliff side beaches are splendid has an appeal that normal beaches lack.
The foggy roads, sound of crashing waves, humid weather, beautiful ocean views sure will please your senses.

Put-in-Bay, Ohio

Put-in-Bay is a good summer weekend get away located in Lake Erie.  This island is smaller but busier compared to Kelly's island.
Miller's Ferry from Catawaba island  is the easiest way to reach Put-in-Bay.  It costs 7$ per adult one way or You can take a car for extra 16$ one way. Golf carts are available for renting on the island for around 80$ for a four seater / day. On a busy day, it is better to rent a golf cart since parking is much easier. Boardwalk has variety of restaurants and activities including parasailing.

A flight of steps take you to the elevator and the elevator goes till the top of the monument.
Monument is in a beautiful park surrounded by water with beautiful views.
Take the cart and go for a ride around the island .  A helicopter ride on a sunny day over the island is a good choice too.
Perry's Cave family fun center has lot of activities. I would suggest skipping the cave tour all together as it felt more like a tourist trap.

Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, Indiana

Indiana Dunes State park ...... Summer, Beach, Splashing Waves and Sand Castles.. this has it all. This 15 mile beach on the shores of Lake Michigan is an easy access summer beach for people in Midwest. No need of explaining how fun beaches are. Better to leave heavy stuff like strollers in the car as they wont be of much use.
